Is it possible to use periodic boundaries in Dolfyn? I was thinking of modelling an infinite array of obstructions with flow from left to right by defining a grid with a single obstruction and coupling the top and bottom cell layers one-on-one (making sure the faces are parallel).

Is there any work done on this? There is some master/slave coupling code in the preprocessor but I suppose that only works if the cell faces coincide (i.e., joining two grid blocks together)?

Yes it is possible Bouke,

There are 2 kinds of periodic, or cyclic, boundaries: 1) in the direction of the flow (velocity components are equal but there will be a pressure loss and temperature change) and 2) and orthogonal (all the variables are copied).

And there are already some pieces of it; if you look at modules.f90 you'll find under RegionData items like direction, translation and angle. If the angle /= 0.0 then it is orthogonal and around the direction vector. Etcetera.

I'll have to grab the bits and pieces of it and wrap it up for you (did something about it a while ago).

That sounds promising! Thanks. I'll take another look at the code.

O sorry Bouke,

I meant that I once started working on it; not that it is implemented, let alone that it works... but basically, yes, it is possible.

:)

That's actually what I meant by 'promising' ... :D

Dear Henk
I need to use periodic boundaries in Dolfyn. I read through this post and saw that there were some communications in 2009. Have there been any updates regarding implimentation of periodic boundaries in Dolfyn? Any help in this regard would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Dear sigma,

I know it's possible and some steps have been done; but other issues were more important. It should be relatively easy in dolfyn; bit more work to search for the opposing boundaries (in the preprocessor or dolfyn).

Sorry.
